Module 6 Objectives Flashcards
List 4 roles of fats in the body
Source of energy - high in calories, slow burning
Important for makeup of cell membranes
Needed for absorption for the fat soluble vitamins, A, E, D, K
Necessary for healthy liver function: building healthy cholesterol and bile
Required for adequate use of proteins
Protective linings for organs of the body
Slows absorption of food for proper energy regulation
Imperative to managing the inflammatory process
Make food taste good:)
Name two fatty acids that are essential to the body
Polyunsaturated - Omega 3/6
Linoleic Acid: precursor to all Omega 6 FA
Alpha-Linoleic Acid: precursor to all Omega 3 FA
Never cook with these! Found in nuts, flax, seeds and fish oils.
Explain the impacts of a diet low in Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids to the healing process
Omega 3 & Omega 6 initiate creation of Prostaglandins. PG1 & PG3 support anti-inflammation and PG2 supports pro-inflammation. Both are necessary to properly heal.
Identify the three primary cofactors you need to consider when balancing prostaglandin
Same for PG1, PG2 and PG3
Proper Digestion- good fat digestion
Proper Liver Function - bile production for proper digestion of dietary fat for emulsification and secretion of enzymes that are stored in the liver.
Enzymes - delta60saturase (break hydrogen bonds on fatty acid chain for better use). Amino acids (properly digested proteins). B6 (organ meats, plant matter, magnesium, zinc.
Prostaglandins - PG1 & PG3 Anti Inflammatory; PG2 Pro Inflammatory
They are hormone like, occur in nearly all body tissues & fluids. Made from elongated forms of EFAs.
Control inflammatory function
Dilating bronchial tubes
Increases blood flow in kidneys
Describe and perform the Functional Evaluation for Fatty Acid deficiency
No LNT for this test; Oral PH between 7.2 and 7.4 shows sufficient EFA - nothing to eat, drink or smoke within 30 minutes and preferably no high fat meals recently.
LNT with different fats: Repeated Muscle Challenge: Postural & Non-postural muscles. Failing non postural may indicate some B vitamin. Failing postural may indicate iron deficiency.
