Module 5 - Section A: Detailed Schedules Flashcards
Operation Setback Chart
-type of scheduling tool
-product structure, routing, and lead time data used to develop operation setback chart for master-scheduled end items
-graphical display of bill of materials and lead-time info provided by routing for each part
-horizontal axis provides lead time from raw materials purchase to component manufacture to assembly of the finished product
Control Board
visual means of showing machine loading or project planning
-also called the schedule board, planning board, or dispatch board
-challenging to keep up to date and to communicate to shop floor
Job Shop Scheduling
-one of the production planning and control techniques used to sequence and prioritize production quantities across ops. in a job shop/work center manufacturing process type
-deal with typically small order quantities, lack of knowledge of what needs to be scheduled until actual orders come in, and complexities of multiple shared resources and varied routings and materials
-many job shops employ drum-buffer-rope (resource-limited scheduling) to help minimize bottlenecks that may shift on a daily basis
Block scheduling
-an operation scheduling technique where each operation is allowed a block of time, such as a day or week
-often used in service industries (and in school systems) as a way to ensure that the larger blocks of time that are available in a schedule aren’t consumed by smaller appointments
example: one schedules the large blocks of time first, such a a 3 hour dental surgery, and then fills in the smaller items in the remaining gaps
Throughput
-rate at which system generates goal units
-expressed for a given time period e.g. month, week, day
-if goal units are money, throughput is an amount of money per time period
Visual Management
-management system whereby every metric that matters, standardized work, and improvement approaches are displayed on the shop floor and in the office
Flow Rate
-running rate
-inverse of cycle time
example: 360 units per shift (or 0.75 units per minute)
-tends to be slower in batch processing due to lack of specialization of machinery and workers
Production Rate
-rate of production usually expressed in units, cases or some other broad measure, expressed by a period of time (e.g. per hour, shift, day, or week)
