Characteristics: infant learns by manipulating objects. At birth reflexive communication, then moves through six stages to reach actual thinking
Language dev:communication largely non-verbal. vocab of more than 4 words by 12 month increases, increases to > than 200 words and use of short sentences before age 2 yrs
2-6yrs: Preoperational
Characteristics: beginning use of symbolic thinking . imaginative play. masters reversibility
7-11yrs: Concrete operations
Characteristics: logical thinking, masters use of numbers and other concrete ideas such as classification and conversation
12+ years: Formal operations
Characteristics: abstract thinking, futaristc, takes a broader more theoretical perspective

- validation is the way one person says to another: i get what you are saying
- to validate is to simply acknowledge and accept another persons thoughts, feelings, sensations and behaviours as understandable for the person at that time
