Module 5 Cockroaches Flashcards
Cockroach morphology
- leather wing
- chewing mouthparts
- large pronotum
- prominent cerci
- dorso-ventrally flattened
development
- hemimetabolous (nymphs and adults in same habitat)
- oviparous: lays ootheca
feral
independent of humans
95% of all species
no medical importance
peridomestic
survive in and around humans
e.g. American and Oriental
domestic
live mostly indoors, completely dependent of humans
most important medically
e.g. Brownbanded and German
oriental cockroach characteristics
black, medium sized ootheca with 16 eggs peridomestic "water bug" - associated with damp environments restricted mobility
oriental cockroach sexual dimorphism
males - winged but don’t fly
females - brachypterous (short winged)
oriental cockroach taxonomy
Blatta orientalis
american cockroach taxonomy
Periplanta americana
american cockroach characteristics
large, red/brown long wings and capable of flight ootheca with 12 eggs most found peridomestic species can move thru sewer system
german cockroach taxonomy
Blattella germanica
german cockroach characteristics
most important domestic pest
found in unclean areas
small, brownish with 2 black lines on pronotum
major nuisance and implications for health
ootheca with 30 eggs
don’t fly, only glide
found mainly in kitchens and pantries
high populations can affect human health:
- contamination of food
- spread of pathogens thru mechanical transmission
- allergies
prevention to minimize entry into buildings
- can enter thru infested containers
- deny enter and shelter (i.e. fix holes)
- basic sanitation
Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies
- insecticides (multiple sprayings)
- boric acid powder (poison is ingested by cockroach killing it, then is fed on by others killing them too)
- roach baits (visit then go back home to die)
- diatomaceous earth (scratches cuticle then insect dries out) (non-toxic to humans)
- sticky traps
