Module 5 Flashcards
What is a newton?
kg x m/sec^2
What is friction?
A force that opposes motion, resulting from the contact of two surfaces.
What is Newton’s First Law (The Law of Inertia)?
It says that an object in motion (or at rest) will tend to stay in motion (or at rest) until it is acted on by an outside force.
What is Newton’s Second Law?
It says that when an object is acted on by one or more outside forces, the vector sum of those forces is equal to the mass of the object times the resulting acceleration vector.
What is a dyne?
g x cm/sec^2
What is a slug?
The English unit for mass.
What is a pound?
slug x ft/sec^2
What are examples of mass measurements?
slugs and grams
What are examples of weight measurements?
Newtons, dynes, and pounds
What is normal force?
A force that results from the contact of two bodies and its perpendicular to the surface of contact.
(When you are standing on floor gravity is pulling you down, but normal force is pushing back on you. Like the opposite of gravity.)
What is kinetic friction?
Friction that opposes motion once the motion has already started.
What is static friction?
Friction that opposes the initiation of motion.
Can static friction increase?
Yes. It can increase to counteract an increasing force which attempts to move it.
Is there a limit to how much static friction can increase?
Yes. Depending on the object and the surface it is on, there is a maximum value that static frictional force can reach.
How do things move even though there is static friction?
If a force greater than the maximum static frictional force is applied to an object, the object will move.
