Module 11 review Flashcards
What is the difference between a transverse wave and a longitudinal wave? Which type of wave best represents sound that is transmitted through air? Which best represents light?
A transverse wave propagates perpendicular to its oscillation and a longitudinal wave propagates parallel to its oscillation. Longitudinal waves best represent sound waves and transverse waves best represent light waves.
Two sounds of equal pitch are heard. The first is quiet and the second is loud. Compare the frequencies of the waves. Compare the amplitude of the waves. Compare their wavelengths.
The frequencies are the same because the pitch is the same. The amplitude of the second sound is larger because it is louder. The wavelengths of the waves are the same because the same sounds are traveling through the same air and thus have the same speed.
Suppose a man is in a car that is stopped at a stoplight. Another car starts accelerating away from his car, blowing the horn. As the other car accelerates, what will happen to the pirch of the horn is heard by the man whose car is stopped at the stoplight?
It will decrease (sound lower).
