What is Occupation?
- Doing work, play and activities of daily living within a temporal physical and sociocultural context
- Essentially, synonymous with “occupational participation” as used in MOHO

Definition of Occupational Participation
Engaging in work, play or activities of daily living part of one’s sociocultural context
Definition of Occupational Performance
Doing a task to participate in a major life area
Definition of Skills
- Discrete, purposeful actions needed to complete a task
- 3 types: motor, process and communication/interaction

- Occupational Adaptation
- Occupational Identity
- Occupational Competence
Occupational Adaptation
Two components:
- Occupational identity
- Occupational competence
Occupational Identity
Cumulative sense of who people are and what they do
Occupational Competence
Extent to which patterns of doing enact one’s occupational identity
Example of “Consequences of Doing” with Fred the Construction worker
Occupational identity
- Fred identifies as a construction worker and landscaping expert
Occupational competence
- Fred is confident he is good with his hands, able to design and plan landscaping projects for multiple purposes
Occupational adaptation
- Fred readily assesses what is needed to get the job done, responds to changes on site, knows he can problem solve and complete projects on time and on budget even when unintended events occur
Purpose of OT
- To facilitate occupational adaptation as a means toward achieving the client’s goals
- Occupational engagement refers to what the client is doing, thinking and feeling through occupational therapy
MOHO Therapeutic Reasoning Process
- generate and use questions
- gather information with client using structured and unstructured means
- create a conceptualization of the client’s situation that includes strengths and challenges
- identify goals and plan for therapy
- implement and review therapy
- collect information to assess outcome
