Module 4: MOHO Nov. 4 Flashcards
Volition
- motivation for occupation
- need to act
- generated from and sustained by experience
3 sub-concepts of volition
- personal causation
- values
- interests
Personal causation
- knowledge of capacity
- awareness of abilities
- sense of efficacy
What does “sense of efficacy” mean?
the perceived effectiveness or control over behavior and desired outcomes
Values
- personal convictions
- sense of obligations
- what’s important or meaningful to do
Interests
- satisfying, enjoyable occupations
- preferences
What does the “propensity to enjoy particular ways of performing occupations over others” fall under?
Volition - Interests
Person sub-concepts
Volition, habituation, performance capacity
Habituation
- Recurring patterns, daily routines
- Automatic
- Acquired through socialization
2 sub-concepts of habituation
Habits & Roles
Habits
- Internalized
- Something that you needed to think about doing becomes automatic
- Acquired tendencies to respond and perform in certain consistent ways in familiar environments
Roles
- responsibilities and obligations associated with a social identity
- culturally informed
- become internalized
- acquired
Ways people interact routinely with their environments (2)
Habits & Roles
Performance Capacity
- mental and physical abilities
- is shaped by how the person experiences impairments/challenges
- objective capacity
- Musculoskeletal, neurologic, cardiopulmonary and other bodily systems
Heterarchy
The principle that aspects of a person & environment are a dynamic whole; a change in one reverberates through the whole system.
Each component contributes something to the total dynamic to influence performance of occupations
How do the human development principles of MOHO influence therapy?
- allows the therapist to holistically understand a client’s situation
- goal is to achieve new & positive pattern of occupational life - new forms of doing, thinking, feeling
Examples of volition
- client believes they have the skills to do it
- client expects success
- client finds occupation interesting bc ___
- occupation fits with overall values and goals
Examples of habituation
- occupation fills a client’s role
- occupation competes/doesn’t compete with other occupations/roles
- habits support occupation and role
Constructs
- high level concepts, the most abstract and symbolic type of concept
- ex: physical environment or volition
Propositions
principles
the relationship between two or more concepts (or constructs)
“The social and physical environment shapes and influences performance of occupations” is an example of:
Proposition
Supportive influences…
afford opportunities
Demanding influences (constraints)…
presses response
Conceptual models guide our ____, while process models guide our _____.
thinking; actions
This conceptual model addresses the motivation for occupation
MOHO
This conceptual model addresses routine patterning of occupations…
MOHO
The nature of skilled performance and influence of the environment on occupation are related to which model?
MOHO
MOHO environment definition
the particular physical, social, cultural, economic, and political features within a person’s context that influence the motivation, organization, and performance of occupation.
the physical environment is comprised of:
objects & spaces
the social environment is comprised of:
tasks & social groups
Tasks that are available, expected, and/or required of people in a given context are an example of:
the social environment
what does the social environment provide?
a set of social norms and conventions for engaging in recognizable occupations
In MOHO, the social environment involves three things:
- tasks,
- social groups
- surrounding cultural, political and economic forces
what do “tasks” provide?
a set of social norms and conventions for engaging in recognizable occupations
give three examples of “social groups”
family, friends, coworkers, neighbors
what is environmental impact?
the influence of the physical and/or social environment on occupation
environmental impact may be ____ or ____
enabling or disabling
four areas that environment influences occupation
- opportunity
- resources
- demand
- constraint
opportunity refers to
that the occupation is available
example of “resources”
ex: the building is accessible
example of “demand”
ex: high standards of performance
example of “constraint”
ex: institutional policy limits choice
