Module 4 Flashcards
What are aliphatic hydrocarbons ?
Carbon atoms are joined together in straight or branched chains
What are alicyclic hydrocarbons?
Carbon atoms are joined together in a ring
What are aromatic hydrocarbons?
One benzene ring in structure
What is a homologous series?
Substances with same functional group differing by a CH2 unit
General formula for alkanes
CnH2n+2
General formula for alcohols?
CnH2n+1 OH
General formula for alkenes?
CnH2n
Functional group of carboxylic acids
-COOH
What is a structural isomer?
Compounds with same molecular formula but different structural formula.
What is a stereoisomer?
Organic compounds with same molecular and structural formula but different arrangements of atoms in space
What is E/Z isomerism?
Stereoisomerism caused by restricted rotation around double bond with two different groups attached to C=C double bond
What is homolytic fission?
When each bonding atom receives one electron from the bonded pair forming two radicals
What is a radical?
Species with one or more unpaired electrons
What is heterolytic fission?
When one bonding atom receives both electrons from bonding pair
What shape do carbons form in alkanes and what is the bond angle?
Tetrahedral, 109.5 degrees
