types of competitions
games: two teams, agreed upon rules, trying to score more points than the others
contests: action is clearly measurable, winner/better athlete is determined by measurable thing (ex: golf, lifting, long jump)
races: competition of speed
performances: element of judging where score is awarded
fight/match: rounds
competition formats
exhibition: don’t really mean anything (all-star game, nascar clash)
stand-alone: may contribute to ranking but not directly related to season or tournament
series or tour: work with one another, intentionally scheduled, travelling events
league: governing body in which team is a member of will set a number of competitions
round robin: doesn’t allow to move up in standings, but rather increase number of games played
tournament: many competitors advancing toward championship, or losing and going home, etc.
tournament forms
single elimination: first-round loser - winner will be determined, but also guarantee participants at least a second competition. feed-in consolation R16, QF, full
double elimination: can lose 1, but still have a chance to win
-compass draw: concerned with determining a winner. if someone loses, they cannot win the tournament, but group teams based on their performance in previous round
-guarantee an exact number of competitions
Seeding
-allows for accomplished teams to not face each other in early rounds of a tournament
