MODULE 3 : RESPIRATORY SYSTEM Flashcards
Gas exchanged between blood and alveoli in lung
EXTERNAL RESPIRATION
Air in/out, gas exchanged in lungs
PULMONARY VENTILATION
Transport of oxygen and carbon dioxide
TRANSPORT OF RESPIRATORY GAES
Gas exchange between blood and tissues
INTERNAL RESPIRATION
Conducts air from the nose up to the terminal bronchioles
CONDUCTING SYSTEM
Actual site of gas exchange
RESPIRATORY SYSTEM
Provides airway for respiration, moisten and warms entering air
NOSE
Serves as resonating chambers for speech
NOSE
Most anterior and dilated portion of the nasal cavity
VESTIBULE
L.E. and L.P. Of Vestibule
L.E. : SSNKE
L.P. : DCT
L.E. Olfactory Region
Pseudo stratified ciliated columnar
Spindle shaped, round nulei, bipolar nerve cells
OLFACTORY or SENSORY CELLS
Tall slender cells with broad apices and tapers basally. Makes up the upper third of the epithelium. Nuclei aravoid
SUPPORTING CELLS
L.E. And L.P. Of Respiratory Region (Schneiderian Membrane)
L.E. : Pseudo stratified ciliated columnar w/ goblet cells
L.P. : loose FECT
Cavities in the frontal, maxillary, ethmoid and sphenoid bones
PARANASAL SINUSES
L.E. of Paranasal Sinuses
L.E. : pseudo stratified columnar ciliated epith. w/less goblet cells
L.E. and L.P. of Pharynx
L.E. : SSq and Pseudo stratified columnar ciliated epithelium with goblet cells
L.P. : much elastic tissue
L.E. of Epiglottis
LIGUAL : SSE
LARYNGEAL : transition : pseudo stratified ciliated epith
L.E. L.P. of Trachea
L.E. : pseudo-stratified ciliated columnar with goblet cells
L.P. : LCT rich in Elastic fibers
Composed of the tertiary Bronchi together with the smaller branches it supplies
BRONCHOPULMONARY SEGMENT
L.E. of Bronchus
L.E. : pseudo-stratified columnar epith w/motile cilia and goblet cells
L.E. of Bronchiole
L.E. : pseudo-stratified columnar ciliated w/goblet cells
L.E. Terminal Bronchiole
L.E. : SCu with no goblet cells
L.E. Respiratory Bronchiole
L.E. : ciliated columnar epith w/o goblet cells later becoming low cuboidal, non ciliated
Are thin Walled polyhedral and hexagonal sacs through whose thin walls are the site of interchange of gas between blood and air takes place
ALVEOLI
Connects neighboring alveoli that open to different bronchioles. Equalizes air pressure between alveoli
ALVEOLAR PORES (Pore of Kohn)
Comprises 95% of alveolar surface. Primarily lines the alveolar surface
TYPE 1 ALVEOLAR CELLS
Are cuboidal cells, occurs in groups of two or three and releases pulmonary surfactant
TYPE 2 ALVEOLAR CELLS
Are mixture of alveolar lining fluid and bronchial mucus which help remove particulate matter component from inspired air
BRONCHOALVEOLAR FLUID
Consists of scattered fibroblasts and sparse extracellular matrix, notably elastic and reticular fibers of connective tissue
INTERALVEOLAR SEPTA
L.E. of Larynx
FALSE VOCAL CORDS : Pseudo stratified, ciliated columnar epith. with Goblet cells
TRUE VOCAL CORDS : SSE
