Module 3 Lesson 1 Flashcards
what are the planets in the solar system?
My Very Educated Mother Just Served Us Nachos
Mercury
venus
earth
mars
jupiter
saturn
uranus
neptune
List some key/unique characteristics of each planet.
mercury: it is the smallest planet in the solar system
venus: it is the hottest planet in the solar system
earth: earth is the only planet with life on it in the solar system
mars: has a very thin atmosphere and cold made from carbon dioxide and nitrogen
jupiter: the largest planet in the solar system
saturn: saturn has 53 moons
uranus: the coldest planet in the solar system and rotates on its side
neptune: neptune is the smallest gas planet. and it is the furthest planet from the solar system
what is the difference between asteroid and a meteoroid.
the difference is an asteroid is a large piece of rock in space. as it is much bigger in size compared to a meteoroid.
a meteroid is broken pieces of asteroids and comets and they has a small size
for something to be considered a planet an object must..
Orbit the Sun
Not be a Moon
Have Enough Mass to be Round
Be Able to Clear it’s Orbit of Debris
what is the kuiper belt and where is it?
the kuiper belt is located outside neptunes orbit.
in the belt there are comets and dwarf planets
Describe nuclear fusion on the Sun. What 2 gases are involved?
the 2 gases involved are hydrogen and helium. nuclear fusion happens in the core of the sun and it is the process of converting hydrogen into helium
difference between nuclear fusion and fusion
Nuclear fusion is when two or more atoms join or fuse together to form a large or a heavier atom.
Fusion is the process that powers the sun and the stars.
How does the temperature of a star determine its colour? How do astronomers determine the colour and composition of stars?
The surface temperature of a star determines the color of light it emits. the bluer it is the hotter the temperature. the redder it is the cooler the temperature is.
to determine the composition of stars astronomers use a spectroscope
provide examples of celestial objects in the solar system
types of celestial bodies Stars. Planets. Satellites. Comets. Asteroids. Meteor and meteorites. Galaxies.
celestial objects
Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune; dwarf planets such as Pluto; dozens of moons; and millions of asteroids, comets, and meteoroids.
comets can be classified as…
short periods (full orbiits less than 200 years)
long period (full orbit, more than 200 years)
what are metoroids? meteors? metorites?
they are made of rock or metal.
meteroids - outspace rocks
meteors - (entering the atmosphere)
metorites - hitting earth
what are asteroids?
they are small objects composed of rocks and metals.
they orbit the sun
they are to small to be considered a planet but are larger than meteroids.
they have an irregular shape
