what is a parallax

A

paralax is the position of an object seen in two different places. By measuring the apparent movement we can calculate the true position of the star

(example: when you look at a relatively nearby star from earth it appears in a certain position. Six months later when earth is on the opposite side of the sun the same star will appear in a different position.)

light year measures object outside our solar system.

astrnomical unit measures objects inside out solar system

this is because it makes it easier and convient for astronmers. because using astronmiic units to count far distances will make the numbeers big and hard to work with.

standard candles is a measure that uses the brightness of an object to determine the distance of how far away they are

ex: The dimmer they appear the further away they are from earth.
