Module 3 Flashcards
Definition of an OVERLAP
The portion of a line that needs to be clear/ unoccupied for the signal to the rear to change to a green proceed aspect
If you were unsure of the signal aspect being displayed, what would be your actions?
Treat the signal at its most restrictive and be prepared to stop at the signal. Fill out an RT3185 if necessary. (contact signal immediately)
How do you read stacked signals?
Top to bottom, left to right
You approach a signal aspect displaying one flashing yellow. What should the next signal be displaying?
A steady yellow and a junction indicator.
Can you leave a station with a class 1 or 2 on the authority of a position signal, shunting signal? Explain
Not normally, but if the signaller has given you permission to do so you can
What does an indicator that reads “shunt limit” (in red) mean, and when would you expect to obey one?
If making a shunt move on a main line (in the wrong direction), you must not pass this board, unless authorised by signaller. If you do it’s classed as a SPAD. Protecting a signal or points.
A colour light signal displaying a clear aspect reverts to danger ahead of you. List your actions
Stop right away, contact signaller, fill in a RT3185, form
You approach a semaphore distant signal in the clear position, but the AWS audible warning sounds in the cab when passing over the associated AWS magnet. List your actions
Be prepared to stop at the next signal. Report to the signaller. Fill in form RT3185
You have passed a colour light signal displaying a green aspect. What colour should the AWS visual indication in the cab be displaying?
Black
The TPWS brake demand indication is FLASHING. List your actions
Stop immediately, DRA on, acknowledge the TPWS by depressing & releasing the button. Contact the signaller and follow their instructions.
When would it be necessary to TEMPORARY ISOLATE the TPWS equipment?
If passing more than 1 consecutive signal or assisting a train from the rear.
How would you know a platform is permissive for your class of train?
Table A diagrams in the sectional appendix
In which publication will you find information with regards to temporary speed restrictions?
WONS - - Weekly Operation Notice
List 4 definitions of an emergency speed restrictions?
1 - not listed in the wons
2 - previously withdrawn and then re-introduced
3 - the speed previously advertised is lower
4 -
When would it be permitted to pass a signal at danger on YOUR OWN AUTHORITY?
At an IBH signal if you cannot contact the signaller.
At a controlled signal if confirmed that the controlling signal box has closed.
List 8 reasons why you may be AUTHORISED to pass a signal at danger?
1 - signal failed
2 - signal is unable to clear due to failed signal or level crossing equipment
3 - shunt move with no associated position light or subsidy signal
4 - engineers train into a
List your actions before and during the movement, when passing a signal at danger WITH AUTHORITY
Confirm with signallerss full instructions and understand.
Reset DRA
TPWS override if needed.
Warn conductor.
Proceed at caution
Check all points are set and at no more than 15mph
When and how would you carry out a running brake test during snow conditions
Every 3-5 minutes, full service brake and want to see a reduction of 10mph
What must you check for when carrying out a running brake test?
Reduction in speed
A route conductor is to accompany you in the driving cab. They do not sign the relevant traction. List what should occur?
Inform him of cab protocol. Show them how to stop the train in an emergency. How to switch the engines off and where emergency equipment is. I will drive at all times.
How would you carry out a controlled test stop (rail adhesion) if requested to do so by the signaller.
I would stop the train normally for the conditions and report back to the signaller once complete.
When MUST you be accompanied in the driving cab if requested to examine the line?
During adverse weather, night time, in a tunnel examining the OHLE
What would be the maximum speed of your train if examining the line for a distorted rail?
20mph
Your train explodes detonators. List your actions
Stop immediately and contact the signaller
List the occasions you may be AUTHORISED to make a wrong direction movement where no signal is provided
SEA DOGS WOOF S - single line working E - engineers train to return over worksite A - assist a failed train D - divided - to rescue a divided train O - obstruction ahead G - grinder train to return to extinguish fire S - shunt move over a ground frame W - wrong routed O - on track machine O - Station overrun F - failed drum controls, unable to drive from leading cab
When must you change your head/tail lights when carrying out a wrong direction movement
If more than 440 yards or to rescue a train from the front
You are making a wrong direction movement when no signal is provided and require to pass over an automatic half barrier level crossing. When would this be permitted?
If the crossing has wrong direction signals or there is a crossing attendant displaying a green flag.
You approach a red and green type level crossing in the wrong direction, NOT equipped with wrong direction controls. List your actions
Stop sound horn, proceed at caution when it’s safe to do so.
When approaching an automatic barrier /open level crossing locally monitored what are you checking?
The white light is flashing and the crossing is clear
When will services be suspended during snow conditions?
When the snow is 8inches above the rails
When will you be limited to a maximum speed of 5mph during flooding
If the water is up to the top of the railhead but not over it
