Module 2 Flashcards
List 5 different people permitted in the cab to carry out their duties
Driver, guard, or competent person, fitter, shunter, route learner, front ender, relevant cab pass holder, pilotman, network rail manager in an emergency, engineering supervisor /person in charge of possession, BTP With a warrant card, RAIB In line with their duties.
Explain good cab protocol
Don’t distract driver, keep cab clean, don’t smoke, eat etc
List 2 instances when you must report a signalling irregularity immediately to the signaller, completing from RT3185
Signal missing, sunlight, foliage, white instead of red yellow green, no aspect shown, wrong sequence, arm not at 45 degrees
What must driver ensure before passing a stop board
Ensure instructions are carried out, the line is clear and that the relevant permissions have been received
Definition of propelling movement
Pushing a traction unit which is not capable of self power or is not in multiple with the propelling traction unit
If controlling a shunting movement by hand signals, how would “move away” be given during darkness or poor visibility
White light moved up and down at side of body
What does 2 mean when controlling a shunting movement by audible signals
Move forward /go ahead
Explain A - foul and B- in clear
Foul- vehicle is obstructing another line. In clear - vehicle is not obstructing any other line
What action should a driver take before moving a train towards a shed or building?
Stop, sound horn, proceed if safe
What checks must be made before coupling 2 units together
Coupler not damaged, electrical cover closed, rose valve intact, Tommy bars in grommets, no non-multi stickers, angle +height of couplers ok, not to be moved boards etc are removed /persons and equipment clear, units are safe to move
After coupling to another unit, how would driver check break continuity?
Depress DSD into forward or reverse, back to neutral to trap brake in step 2,check guage on other unit reads correct for the type
Draw and explain positions on a brake control handle
Release/step1/step2/step3 or full service /emergency
Explain how parking brake works
When air pressure drops below 1.9, the spring applied parking brake is released as there is not enough air to hold it back. It then pushes against the brake cylinder and holds train. Spring applied, air released.
Maximum number of vehicles permitted to be coupled together
A-14x
B-15x (not 153)
C-153
A-8
B-12
C-6
