module 24 - intro to memory Flashcards
define:
memory
the persistence of learning over time through the storage and retrieval of info
define:
flashbulb memory
a clear memory of an emotionally significant moment/event
what are the 3 stages of Atkinson-Shiffrin’s three stage processing model of memory?
- we first record to-be-remember info as a fleeting sensory memory
(the immediate, very brief recording of sensory info in the mem system) - it is then processed into a short-term memory
(activated mem that holds a few items briefly before the info is stored or forgotten)
where it is then encoded through rehearsal for - long term memory
(the relatively permanent and limitless storehouse of the memory system. includes knowledge, skills, experiences, etc)
and later retrieval
explain:
why is the 3 step process limited and fallible?
some info skip the first 2 stages and is processed into a long term memory automatically w/o our conscious awareness (referred as the working memory)
define:
working memory
a newer understanding of short term memory that involves conscious, active processing of incoming auditory and visual spatial info, and of info retrieved from long term mem
fill in the blank:
working memory quickly fades unless we keep __________ / _____ it
