What is the difference between antigenic shift and drift?
Shift = genetic recombination
Drift = minor change in surface antigens, creating new strains
Who should get the flu shot?
Everyone who is able to but specifically those at high-risk of complications or those capable of spreading influenza to individuals at high risk of complications.
In children aged 2-6, which flu vaccine has better efficacy?
LAIV
What age group needs 2 doses of the flu vaccine?
children 6 months to 9 years of age getting the flu vaccine for the first time
What should the interval be between flu doses?
minimum 4 weeks
Should children less than 6 months old get the flu shot?
No - not great efficacy for this population
What are some CI to LAIV?
- kids under 2 yrs
- ppl with severe asthma
- kids (under 18) receiving aspirin therapy (aspirin containing therapy should be delayed for 4 weeks after recent of LAIV)
- pregnancy
- immunocompromised
What age group is LAIV preferred ?
2-17 years old
What flu vaccines are appropriate for children 6-23 months of age?
TIV, QIV
What flu vaccines are appropriate for adults 18-59?
TIV, QIV, TIV-ID, LAIV
