Module 2 - Study Guide Flashcards

1
Q

Name and define, the planes and axes of motion and what movement occurs in each

A

The planes of motion are:
Sagittal - Divides the body into left and right
Coronal - Divides the body into anterior (front) and posterior (back)
Transverse: Divides the body into upper and lower

The axes of motion are:
Sagittal axis/Anteroposterior (A-P) - Extends from front to back and abduction-adduction occurs around it
Coronal axis/Mediolateral (M-L) - Extends from side to side/flexion-extension occurs around it
Longitudinal axis/Vertical axis - Top to bottom/medial-lateral rotation occurs around it

Q

Define the following ranges of motion:
Flexion
Extension
Adduction
Rotation
Tilt

A

Flexion: Bringing the anterior surface of a body segment towards the anterior surface of an adjacent body segment (except at the knee where posterior surfaces are being approximated)/bending
Extension: Moving from a flexed position towards the anatomical position or beyond/straightening
Hyperextension: Moving in extension past the anatomical position
Abduction: Moving away from the midline of the body
Adduction: Moving towards the midline of the body
External Rotation: Turning the anterior surface outward
Internal Rotation: Turning the anterior surface inward

Q

Used correctly, is Pilates equipment considered safe, stable and easy to use? Discuss the reasons why or why not.

A

Pilates apparatus is very dangerous if not used correctly and poses a risk to both client and instructors. Make sure to follow the safety guidelines and observe all protocols. Check condition of the springs and service apparatus regularly. Assist clients when getting on and off equipment. Do not unload all springs while client is on reformer. Use safety straps for Cadillac.
