Module 1 - Study Guide Questions Flashcards
Define Muscle Focus, Objectives and Cues and describe how they relate to exercise description, analysis and teaching
Together these three things provide the focus, context and execution of an exercise. Without focus, there is no direction. Without objectives, there is unfulfilled potential. Without cues, there is no precision.
Define Neutral Pelvis
Neutral pelvis refers to the position of the pelvis when the ASIS on each side of the pelvis and the PS are in the same horizontal plane (coronal plane when erect) and the two ASIS are in the same transverse plane.
Define Neutral Spine
Natural position/curves of the spine resulting from a neutral pelvis.
Can you be in Neutral Spine position without maintaining a Neutral Pelvis position?
No, when the spine is neutral the pelvis must be neutral too. Neutral pelvis can be achieved without neutral spine though.
Define the action of the diaphragm in the breath cycle:
-During Inhale
-During Exhale
During inhale: lowers
During exhale: relaxes
Name four muscle groups that act on the Pelvic Complex
Pelvic floor, spinal flexors, spinal extensors, spinal lateral flexors & rotators, hip flexors, hip extensors, hip adductors, hip abductors, hip external & internal rotators
What do the terms ASIS and PS stand for and what role do they play in achieving a neutral pelvis?
ASIS: Anterior superior iliac spine
PS: Pubic symphis
Explain triangle analogy
Can you maintain a Neutral Spine position while executive Chest Life and Chest Lift w/ Rotation?
Yes
What are the benefits of Pilates (lateral or intercostals) breathing?
Maintains abdominal contraction, muscles remain active
Name each of the Ten Principles of the Pilates Method
Awareness, Balance, Breath, Control, Center, Concentration, Efficiency, Flow, Precision, Harmony
