-> a system of shared meanings that are passed from generations thrtough sumbols allowing communication, maintianing and understanding life.
define the cultural studies definiton of culture
-> site of meanings that are consistently negootiated

-> 19th century–> characterized non-europeans societies as barbaric, lacking culture
-> beginning of WW1–> Most of the world had been colonized by europe.–> impacted the intercultutal communication

- ruling class, those who were educated in pretigious schools

-mass culture-> mass produced for profit
- middle class culture-> from the gorth in the middle class
- commercial–> also for the middle class

how does the dominant culture impact people from non-dominant cultures
-> Aware of differences, lead to exclusion, assimilating to domiannt culture.
relationship of pop culture and dominant culture
-> pop culture is not neutral–> reflects values of whoever has the most infuelnce on society.
-> media and entermaintmets are mostly created by dominant group–> difficult for minority groups to see themselves represented in pop culture.
