Module 2 Copper Pipe Flashcards
Copper tubing is supplied in three different ways what are they??
Light gauge tubing, kuterlon copper tubing, outside diameter copper tubing,
Where would u use light gauge tubing??
It is suitable for All above ground hot and cold water services and central heating pipe work, it’s is supplied in half hard temper in 6m lengths
What does half hard temper mean?
That it normally has to be annealed before bending by spring
How is light gauge normally jointed?
By non manipulative compression fittings, capillary soldering fittings , and bronze welding
Where is kuterlon copper tubing suitable for?
Underground main seater pipe work applications it’s dead soft temper so is ver easily bent into shape by hand, and is jointed by means of manipulative compression joints
Where is outside diameter copper tubing used?
Suitable for micro mini and central heating applications jointed by means of non manipulative compression fitting and capillary soldering joints
How are copper pipes joined?
Compression capillary or bronze welding joints
Compression joints fall into 2 distinctive groups what are they??
Non manipulative fittings and manipulative fittings
What are advantages of using cold jointing technique?
No hot works permit is needed, no fumes are produced and no fluxes are present to promote corrosion within the system
What is the disadvantage of cold jointing technique?
The initial cost of crimping tools and the extra cost of the press fittings
Copper properties?
Copper is a mineral and an element essential to every day life
What is laminar flow??
It’s the smooth flow of water in a pipeline
Talk about bronze welding??
Although it is referred to as welding no melting or fusion of the parent metal takes place
What is used when bronze welding?
Icy acetylene equipment is most satisfactory for this as it’s able to produce an intensely hot flame that gives controlled local heating
What type of rod is used when bronze welding?
A special brass rod is used to make the joint, it’s necessary to add flux to the joint enable the rod to adhere to the copper and to prevent oxidation
What is capillary attraction?
When liquid sucks up between two surfaces
What is flux?
It’s a liquid or a powder or solid material used for welding and soldering its purpose is to remove and then exclude oxides from the joint,
What are the types of soldering?
Soft and hard solder
What is hard soldering?
Also know as silver soldering or cupro tectic welding this is because the rod uses a small amount of silver to lower its melting point
What is soft solder?
It’s a means of jointing pipe using traditional plumbing solder, solder is usually incorporated into each each one in the form of an integral ring, fittings without this ring of solder are also available and are termed “end feed”
What must be done when solder is used in heating systems?
They must be flushed out thoroughly to remove baby excess or residue flux
What solder must be used if on a water mains?
Lead free
What are two different forces of attraction?
Surface tension and adhesive
Name some jointing techniques ?
Push fit joints, press fit joints, solder less joints
What are the advantages of copper pipe?
Professional image easy to work, durable and long lasting, biostatic, recyclable, withstands high temps, safe in use, full bore no insert required
