Module 1 Properties Of Materials Flashcards
Malleability explain?
The ability of a metal to be worked into a shape without breaking in all directions , eg lead
Fusibility explain??
Denotes the point at which a metal will melt or fuse with another metal ,mild steel has the highest melting point 1926’c
Ductility explain?
The ability of a metal to be STRETCHED without it breaking eg copper
Tenacity explain?
Denotes a material ability to RESIST being stretched or pulled apart (stubborn)
Tensile strength explain?
Is a measure of tenacity a special machine is used to test various materials
Elasticity explain?
Is the ability of a material to return to its original shape Baxter being pulled or pushed out of shape eg rubber
Durability explain?
Is the ability of a material to resist wear and tear
Define Alloys?
An alloy is a metallic substance made by mixing two or more elements together one of which must be a metal
What is an element in alloys?
An element is a substance made up of atoms all of one kind eg zinc copper or aluminium
What is made if zinc and copper are mixed?
If the were to be melted together BRASS would be the alloy made
An alloy needs at least one metal to make it give an example?
Cast iron which is made by mixing iron and carbon
Chromium?
Increases its corrosion resistance
Magnesium ?
Increases its toughness
Silicon ?
Destroys its magnetic properties
Vanadium?
Makes it less brittle if dropped
Copper?
Protects fro corrosion eg coins
Give examples of pure metal elements?
Copper iron lead zinc aluminium tin
Brass name its components and its use?
Copper and zinc used for pipe fittings
Bronze name its components and used for ?
Copper and tin used for underground pipes and fitting
Cast iron name its components and used for?
Carbon and iron used for pipes and boilers
Mild steel name its components and used for?
Carbon and iron used in popes and fitting
Soft solder name its components and used for?
Tim lead used for blowpipe and soldering
Hard solder name its components and uses
Silver copper used in cuprotectic joints
Lead free solder name its components And used for ?
Silver and tin used for blowpipe soldering
Annealing explain it?
This is treatment of a metal to improve its ductility or make it softer
When would u use annealing?
On copper Pipework prior to spring bending heat is applied
What will happen to copper after its is worked??
Annealed copper will harden after it is worked upon and will often need re annealing
Work hardening explain it?
This happens to a metal that has been bossed or drawn into a new shape, it can make the metal brittle or hard to work with
Tempering explain?
This is a process of strengthening a metal or making it harder done by heating to very high temp then cooling rapid is water or oil
