S+S, incubation period, length contagious, nursing interventions of Chicken Pox (Varicella)

A

-Prodromal: mild fever, macules, papules, vesicles, pustules, scabs
- Incubation: 2-3 weeks
- contagious: 6 days after rash. Isolate until all lesions are dry
- Trim fingernails to prevent scratching
Calamine lotion may reduce itching
Airborne isolation precautions

  • 2-3 weeks

  • 1-2 weeks incub.
  • 4 days before to 5 days after rash appears
  • Symptomatic care; Provide quiet activities

    Measures to reduce eyestrain; detailed oral care; Avoid use of soap

  • until swelling subsides
  • Encourage fluids, apply ice compresses to neck for comfort; Droplet precautions(if hospitalized; Avoid citrus & spices that stimulate salivary flow

  • Low grade fever, malaise, jaundice, enlarged spleen
  • 2-6 weeks
  • May return to school when fever and swallowing are normal (may be contagious for 3+ months)
  • Rest & supportive tx

    Contact sports avoided until liver & spleen lab tests normal
