Module 12 Flashcards
Karla just became the regional manager of her division. She was told thatas the regional manager, she would be expected to contribute to the planning of the organization’s strategy. Unfortunately, Karla did not realize that she would have to spend a lot of time in her new job doing administrative work, such as resolving HR disputes, coordinating department meetings, and signing off on expense reports. What is the main contribution of Lazarus’ transactional model of stress?
- “it describes the response to stressors as an individualized appraisal of a situation.
- Cognitive appraisal is a key feature of tehis model, as opoposed to a physiological only response, which forms Selye’s original model of stress.
- (People think, not just respond with increased heartrate.)”
What is the main contribution of McGrath’s Model of Job Stress?
- “its emphasis on stress processes in the workplace –
- that stress is an interactive cycle between people and their work environment,
- and that as one responds to the stress, the original stressful sitution changes.”
Which of the following best characterizes what “stress” is?
a. having a headache because you are balancing too many projects at work
b. an ongoing conflict with a coworker
c. feeling like you just cannot live up to your boss’ expectations while working on a project

feeling like you just cannot live up to your boss’ expectations while working on a project.
Stress is a process, a response to factors in the workplace.
Answer a is better described as a strain, an outcome of the stress process. Answer b & d are characterized as triggers or stressors, which are environmental factors that may lead to stress.

What sort of factors affect how we experience stress?
- personality
- individual coping mechanisms
- continued exposure to stressful events
- having support from others
All of these are correct. Different models and theories of stress explain how these components play into individuals’ experiences of stress.
Byrne Appendix 479
True or False - Stress negatively affects people
- True! Stress can lead to very serious health problems such as heart attacks.
- It depends – some level of stress is actually good for people, but too much stress most often leads to negative consequences.
- True, there isn’t much we can do to counteract stress.
- False, stress can feel negative in the moment, but it doesn’t lead to any lasting effects.
Though answer a is true, b is the better choice.
We often talk about stress in this way, stress is not inherently negative. Eustress is a term used to describe positive responses to stress.
