Module 10 A Psychoacoustics Flashcards
What hearing science is a known as the relationship between a physical signal that is presented and our psychological response?
psychoacoustics
Our sensitivity to sound is best at what frequencies?
2000-5000
Our sensitivity to sound is quite poor below what range of frequencies?
below 100 HZ and above 10k HZ
When a sound reaches about 100 dB SPL, this noise is considered?
uncomfortably loud
At 120 to 140 dB sPL, the noise presented is described as?
a tactile feeling rather than a sound.
What are the two ways in which we can present sound to measure thresholds? Name the official names
Using headphones and using speakers
headphones= Minimum audible pressure (MAP)
Speakers= Minimum audible field (MAF)
When we measure threshold and are using MAP, are we using both ears to measure? Also, how is the sound being calibrated?
We are measuring sound one ear at a time. The SPL is being measured at the ear drum.
When we measure threshold using MAF, are we using both ears to measure? Also, how is the sound being calibrated?
We are measuring sound using both ears at a time. The SPL is being calibrated by measuring sound at the point where the individual is sitting.
Which one is better–MAF or MAP? Why?
MAF is better. It tends to be 6 db lower. It has better sensitivity than MAP threshold due to binaural summation.
The three measurements techniques used in psychoacoustics are: The methods___, ____. ___
limit, adjustment and constant stimuli
What psychoacoustic method allows the researcher to control the stimulus.
Method of limits
does the method of limits use ascending or descending runs to test the sound that is presented to the patient?
Uses both. The researcher presents them the first sound that they are aware of what they are looking for. The researcher continue to administer each sound as lower and lower levels until the can no longer hear the soun.d. They then do the opposite..keep presenting really low sounds they can’t hear until they can.. the mean is averaged out and we get the threshold.
The crossover point refers to?
The level at which they change from indicating they can hear to not hearing or they can’t hear to they can hear is known as crossover point.
Like the method of limits, the Method of adjustment is similar in what sense? How do they differ?
They are the same because they use both ascending and descending runs. They are different because it is the PATIENT that is in charge of adjusting the stimulus
