Q

What does Saulo mean when he says “hand strength algorithm”?

A

When a reg plays several tables simultaneously, he will act first on hands that are worth more money in comparison to hands that are worth less money.

The probability of a strong hand being played fast is higher than the probability of it being played slow,

and the probability of a weak hand being played slow is higher than the probability of a weak hand being player fast.

Q

Are timing tells absolute? Give example statistics to demonstrate

A

Nope, it’s a probabilistic phenomena- not an absolute one.

For example, vs 3-bet, on average Saulo’s students 4-bet 10.5% of the time, 14% when 1.5s or less and 8.4% if 9s or more.

Q

What are the reasons that timing tells exist?

A
  1. Hand strength algorithm (when a reg plays several tables at the same time)

2.Difficulty of decision - impacts how much time it takes to make a decision. With “easy” hands, players make a very quick decision, whereas difficult decisions take time.

Q

What’s a good analogy for thinking about timing-tells?

A

It’s like I break my hands preflop into “nuts” (QQ+, AK) and bet them big,

mediocre and bet them medium

and potential, and bet them small.

Timing tells break (IN A PROBABILISTIC WAY) villain’s range based on timing-tells.

Q

What does “focus on the extremes” mean in the context of exploiting?

A

Small reads allow only for small adjustments.

Big adjustments require equally big reads.

So in timing tells - focus on the very low timings and very long timings.

Q

What thresholds for timings does Saulo recommend?

What should I do with timing tells in between those thresholds?

A

Focus on the low-hanging fruit- the extremes. In between tells - I should ignore.

preflop RFI - 2 secs or lower is quick, 8 seconds and higher is slow

preflop 3-bet: lower than 3 seconds is quick, higher than 10 seconds

postflop: river:

4-seconds or less is quick
15-seconds or higher is long

non-river:
same as preflop 3-bet

Add 1-2 seconds if the format I’m playing is slow-paced

Q

What does “make thresholds adjustment first” mean in the context of exploiting?

A

Use, at least to begin with, a min exploit approach: Shift a mixed strategy holdings towards the exploit.

For example, instead of folding pure calls (but low ev) hands like J3s BB vs BU, fold A6o which is mixed between calling and folding when villain opens very quickly.

That is to say, the exploit will change only the frequency of my range so my overall strategy will still be solid.

Q

What habit is mandatory to develop in order to take advantage of timing tells exploits?

A

I have to know how long my opponent took - so I need to be in the habit of counting the time it took my opponent to act.

Q

What should I do vs regs who take their time, on purpose, when opening with a premium?

A

Now their quick actions are capped and slow actions are premiums - that is a timing-tell as well.

Q

What are the “intermediate” and “advanced” level of exploits?

When will it not matter?

A

Intermediate - soft exploit, shifting only mixed strategies

advanced - max exploit- shifting pure strategies.

When the exploit is that I need to play tighter, then it won’t matter, because it won’t be revealed that I exploit (no showdown).
