What is punctuation?
Punctuation is a set of marks and symbols that are used to express the meaning of sentences correctly.
When is the full stop used?
To mark the end of a sentence.
I broke my toe.
Name 2 examples of when is a comma used?
To seperate items on a list.
Used before conjunctions in order to seperate two independent clauses.
She bought apples, pie, carrots and wool.
She was a fantastic athlete, but she never won any medals.
When would you use the question mark?
At the end of a question.
Where are you?
When do you use a semi colon?
It’s stronger in use than the comma, not as definite as a fullstop
Between 2 independent clauses that can stand on their own
Parallel / similar meaning in 2 sentences
I am tired; I want to sleep.
When is the hyphen used?
To join words with a combined meaning.
Fractions and numbers.
Foreign-film
Run-down
Fifty-four
When is the elipsis used?
When we omit a word.
It saves space and is useful when quoting something.
When do you use square brackets?
Used to clarify a word or phrase.
She [the nurse on the scene]…
When are round brackets used?
Used to insert additional information.
He ran (huffing and puffing) to the room.
