Module 1 Ear Flashcards
Auricle of ear
Appendage of skin, cartilage, and connective tissue that contains part of external acoustic meatus
Act as a funnel to collect and modify sound waves
Aka external ear or pinna
Vestibulocochlear nerve (CN VIII)
Located in Posterior cranial fossa
Hearing (cochlea) and balance (semicircular canals and vestibule)
Connects to pons and medulla oblongata
External acoustic meatus
Located on temporal bone
Short canal of external ear that ends at tympanic membrane
Lateral 1/3 is cartilage, medial 2/3 is bony
Temporal bone
Paired irregular flat bone that consists of squamous, petrous, mastoid, and tympanic parts
Temporal lobe
Lateral and inferior portion of cerebral hemisphere
Functions in hearing, smell, memory, speech perception and recognition
Malleus
Small bone shaped like a hammer attached to inner surface of tympanic membrane (ear drum)
Transfers sound waves along with stapes and incus to inner ear
Tympanic membrane
Thin semi-transparent oval membrane that separates external acoustic meatus from tympanic cavity
Aka ear drum
Incus
Small bone with one expanded end shaped like an anvil
Stapes
Small bone shaped like a stirrup
Tympanic cavity
Air filled chamber between external ear and inner ear that contains ossicles (the small bones) and muscles
Otitis media is the infection of the tympanic cavity which is common in children with spread of infection via auditory tube
Semicircular ducts
Three membranous semicircle ducts within bony canals, oriented in perpendicular planes
Organ of equilibrium
Utricle of ear
Part of vestibular apparatus encased in vestibule
Senses linear movement
Contains macula of utricle
Cochlea
Coiled membranous rube surrounded by bone that contains three fluid filled chambers
Organ of hearing
Auditory tube
One third is bone, anterior two thirds is cartilage
Mucous membrane lined passage between middle ear and nasopharynx
Allows for spread of infection from tympanic cavity
