Module 1 Body Tissues Flashcards
4 types of tissue in the human body
Epithelial; connective; muscle; nervous
Epithelial tissue (epithelium) - where do you find it?
lines or covers internal and external organs; lines blood vessels, digestive, reproductive, urinary, and respiratory tracts
Epithelial tissue (epithelium) - function?
protects organs; absorbs nutrients; excretes waste
Epithelial tissue (epithelium) - features
typically avascular; reproduces and regenerates quickly
Five classifications of connective tissue
liquid (blood, lymph); bone; cartilaginous; loose (fascia, adipose tissue); dense (ligaments, tendons)
3 types of cartilaginous tissue
hyaline cartilage (rubbery and smooth); fibrocartilage (greatest tensile strength), elastic cartilage (soft and pliable)
characteristics of cartilage
avascular, tough, durable
where would you find hyaline cartilage?
rings of trachea; fetal skeleton
where would you find fibrocartilage?
intervertebral discs; meniscus of knee
where would you find elastic cartilage?
nose; ears
3 types of muscle tissue
skeletal; cardiac; smooth
characteristics of skeletal muscle
voluntary; cells are rod-shaped; multi-nucleated; designed for power and support; striated;
characteristics of cardiac muscle
exclusively in heart wall; Y or H shaped; contain intercalated discs between cells; allows rhythmic contraction for blood flow
characteristics of smooth muscles
walls of hollow organs(bladder, stomach, uterus); lines tubes (intestines, blood vessels); long, narrow spindle shape (no striations); one nucleus; involuntary
where would you find nervous tissue?
brain; spinal cord; peripheral nerves
