Modes of inheritance Flashcards
Define sex linkage inheritance
Sex - linkage
Refers to alleles that are found on sex chromosomes which determines a particular trait.
Recessive characteristics are usually found on female carriers
A female carrier for a recessive gene is not expressed but can be passed on.
Outline all of the non mendelian crosses
Incomplete dominance.
Co-dominance.
Sex linkage.
Multiple alleles.
What does Mendal state?
hereditary elements are passed on in discrete units rather than “blended” together at each new generation
Define Incomplete dominance inheritance
Incomplete dominance
When both dominant alleles are expressed at the same time resulting in BLENDED characteristics
Eg, pink roses (both colours are mixed) red + white are dominant
Define Multiple alleles inheritance
Multiple alleles
When a gene has 3 or more alleles
Eg, blood types - 4 blood type AB, A, B, O(recessive)
Define Codominance inheritance
Codominance
When alleles are both expressed as they are both dominant
For eg, roan cows that shows red and white spots
Define Autosomal inhertance
Autosomal
Having to do with any of the 22 numbered pairs of chromosomes found in most human cells.
