Q

define fertilisation

A

Refers to the fusion between a haploid egg cell (female gamete) and a haploid sperm cell (male gamete), in order to produce a diploid zygote.

Q

Outline the steps of fertilisation

A
  1. sperm makes contact with egg and burrows through the corona radiata
  2. sperm attaches to receptor of zona pellucida
  3. digestive enzymes released form acrosome and sperm burrows through zona pellucida
  4. plasma membranes of sperm and egg fuse
  5. sperm nucleus enters egg

Q

list the process of implantation

A

the sperm and egg unite in the fallopian tubes form a zygote (diploid)

The zygote then forms into a morula and starts to proliferate via mitosis (a ball of stem cells )

Turns into a blastocyst (causes differentiation)

Blastocyst then attaches to the uterus lining called the endometrium (implantation)

Embryo is formed via cell specialisation (placenta is developed during that time)
