Hormonal change of menstrual cycle Flashcards
describe the process of step 1
Under influence of FSH, one or more oocytes (egg before it has matured) will mature with a group of cells (follicles) that protect and nourish the immature egg.
describe the process of step 2
Once egg has matured, follicle release oestrogen, causes lining of endometrium to thicken, becoming rich in blood vessels (provides nutrients)
describe the process of step 3
Ovulation occurs
Release of an mature egg from follicle, which is triggered by the luteinising hormone
describe the process of step 4
Ovum (ripe mature egg)
Moves out of the fallopian tubes and into the uterus
describe the process of step 5
Corpus luteum (burst follicle without egg)
Is stimulated by LH and releases oestrogen and progesterone. Causes thickening of uterus if fertilisation were to occur
If egg is not fertilised, it passed out of the reproductive tract and corpus luteum will disintegrate
Thickened endometrium will break down and menstrual cycle occurs (periods)
