mitosis Flashcards
Define what mitosis is
Single cell division which produces 2 genetically identical daughter cells
list the phases in IPMAT
interphase, prophase, metaphase, anaphase, telophase
is cytokinesis in mitosis?
no
describe what happens in interphase
During the first stage, the cell prepares for cell division by replication, to produce two copies of each chromosome
describe what happens in prophase
This is the longest stage, as the duplicated chromosomes condense and centrioles start to move at each end of the cell. (creates mitotic spindle)
describe what happens in metaphase
Chromosomes now line up along the centre of the cell
describe what happens anaphase
Sister chromatids are drawn to opposite poles of the dividing cells by mitotic spindles
describe what happens in telophase
Nucleus membrane starts to reform around separates sister chromatids
As pro - metaphase is not necessarily stated in mitosis, describe what happens in that stage.
nucleus breaks down and spindles attach to sister chromatids
Relatively, what are the roles of mitosis in terms of keeping an individual healthy?
Promote growth in multicellular organism in which growth relies of mitotic division eg, morula to blastocyst
Repairs damaged tissues
Replaces worn out tissues
