most commonly used to treat anxiety and depression, but can be useful for other problems
what is psychodynamic psychotherapy
form of depth psychology, with a primary focus of revealing the unconscious content of a client’s psyche in an effort to alleviate psychic tension
there is a range of therapeutic interventions that draw upon this model, including art psychotherapy, play therapy
what does psychoanalytic/psychodynamic psychotherapy used for
aims to help people with psychological disorders to understand and change complex, deep seated and often unconsciously based emotional and relationship problems
however, can also be used to help those who experience a loss of meaning in their lives or who are seeking a greater sense of fulfilment
psychodynamic vs psychoanalysis
psychodynamic therapy uses psychoanalysis principles adopted to a less intensive style of working, usually at a frequency of once or twice a week
psychodynamic - once or twice a week
psychoanalysis - 4-5 times a week
Hermann Rorschach - Rorschach test
education in art helped to spur the development of a set of inkblots that were used to experimentally measure various unconscious parts of the subjects personality
questions about what a person sees in the image
what is systemic therapy
seeks to address people not only on the individual level, but also as people in relationships, dealing with the interactions of groups and their interactional patterns and dynamics
approaches problems practically rather than analytically
it does NOT attempt to determine past causes or assign diagnoses. rather, it seeks to identify stagnant patterns of behaviour in groups of people such as family
what are the roots of systemic therapy
has roots in family therapy
systemic therapy - what is narrative therapy
form of psychotherapy that seeks to help people identify their values and the skills and knowledge hey have to live theres values, so they can effectively confront whatever problems they face
therapist seeks to help the person co-author a new narrative about themselves by investigating the history of those qualities
what is third wave CBT
group of emerging approaches to psychotherapy that represent both an extension of and deviation from traditional CBT approaches
looks at changing behaviour and the context of cognitions, by adopting mindfulness, acceptance and compassion approaches
what is dialectical behavioural therapy
evidence based, began with efforts to treat emotionally unstable/borderline personality disorder
can be useful in treating mood disorders, suicidal ideation and for change in behavioural patterns such as SH
what is acceptance and commitment therapy
uses acceptance and mindfulness strategies, mixed in different ways with commitment and behaviour change strategies, to increase psychological flexibility
what is interpersonal therapy
talking treatment that helps people with depression identify and address problems in their relationships with family, partners and friends
idea that poor relationships can leave a person feeling depressed
mindfulness based cognitive therapy
help you focus thoughts and feelings as they happen moment by moment
may be offered to you after a course of treatment for depression to stop it coming back
what is compassion focused therapy
used to treat problems associated with shame, self-criticism, and self hate
central technique is compassionate mind training, which teaches skills and attributes of compassion
largely built on the idea that the evolution of caring behaviour has major regulatory and developmental functions
according to evolutionary analysis, there are three types of functional emotion regulation systems: drive, safety and treat - CFT is based on the relationship and interactions between these systems
