Models of Communication Flashcards
What are the types models of communication?
Linear, interactive, and transactional.
What is the linear model?
It is a one sided communication that doesn’t require feedback. It is focused on the source and receiver is passive. (ex. News report, TV commercial, ..)
What model is under the linear model of communication?
Aristotle’s model
What is Aristotle’s model?
It is one of the earliest theories of communication that focuses on the art of persuasion/rhetoric. It is about a speaker talking to an audience.
What are the persuasive qualities that Aristotle’s model highlights?
Ethos, pathos, and logos.
What is ethos?
Refers to the credibility of the speaker. The speaker gains more authority and power because of their status as an expert in the field. (ex. Doctors, officials, teachers…)
What is pathos?
Refers to how the speaker can connect with their audience and trigger emotions. (ex. Motivational speakers, etc….)
What is logos?
Refers to the use of logic in making a point. The speaker can take facts, figures, and other pieces of information in order to establish and support their points. (ex. Lawyers, researchers, etc…)
What is the transactional model?
It is a continuous back and forth interaction where both parties act as senders and receivers at the same time. Feedback occurs immediately, and in this way, there’s no specific sender or receiver, they are both communicators. (ex. Debating, conversation (one person talks while the other nods along), etc…)
What is the interactive model?
This involves both a sender and a receiver. Feedback occurs, but with a time lag. It is a symmetric model with both parties being of equal importance and taking turns in communicating. (ex. Letters, emails, etc…)
What is the model under the interactive model?
Schramm’s model
What is Schramm’s model?
Its a model in which messages go in two directions between encoding and decoding. Both parties that communicate to each other are both those that encode, interpret, and decode a message. This means that the communication is equal and reciprocal.
What is the mode under transactional model?
Wood’s model
What is Wood’s model?
Its a model that highlights the relationship of the communicators to each other. It states that communication is a dynamic and context dependent process where both parties send, receive, and interpret messages based on their relationship, context, and personal experiences.
