What is communication breakdown and what are communication barriers?
Communication breakdown is the failure in the process of receiving, sending, or understanding a message. It can come as a result of communication barriers, which are the factors that prevent us from effectively exchanging and understanding messages.
Why do these communication barriers matter? What can they cause?
These communication barriers can bring about missed opportunities, miscommunication, and conflicts.
How do communication barriers bring about missed opportunities?
It may lead to missing out on valuable information or advice due to our misinterpretations or misunderstandings of the message.
How do communication barriers bring about miscommunication?
It is caused by not communicating clearly or not being able to understand someone else’s point of view.
How do communication barriers bring about conflicts?
The miscommunications that emerge from communication barriers can result in conflicts, disagreements, or hurt feelings.
What are the communication barriers?
Physical, language, semantic, psychological, cultural, and organizational barrier. (PLSPCO)
What is the physical barrier?
Refers to the physical distance or background noise that can disrupt the clarity of the message.
What is the language barrier?
Refers to the misunderstandings due to different languages, accents, dialects, jargons, slang, or technical terms.
What is the semantic barrier?
Refers to the misunderstandings caused by the difference in the interpretations of words, phrases, and jargons.
What is the psychological barrier?
These are the misunderstandings due to the internal stresses, emotions, or physical states that hinder communication.
What is the cultural barrier?
The differences in language, culture, beliefs values, and norms that can lead to misunderstandings. This means that different gestures may have different implications/meanings across different cultures.
What is the organizational barrier?
Communication that may be hindered due to the reluctance to speak up or challenge authority.
