Appendicular Skeleton
Upper & Lower Limbs

Types of Joint
- Immovable or Fibrous – skull and pelvis
- Slightly movable or Cartilaginous – symphysis pubis, intervertebral
- Freely movable or Synovial – Elbow, hip and knee

Identify, in writing, the function(s) of:
- Ligaments
- Tendons
3 Muscle
Ligaments
A ligament is a thick connective tissue that connects bone to bone, forming joints.

Tendons
Tendons are fibrous bands that connect muscle to bone. Though tendons are extremely strong, they cannot easily heal from damage.

Ligaments, Tendons & Muscles
Muscle has 4 basic
characteristics:
- Excitability – receive and respond to stimuli
- Contractility – shorten and thicken, or contract in response to stimuli
- Extensibility – can be stretched
- Elasticity – can return to original shape
