[MOD 7] Digestive and Respiratory System Flashcards
What is the digestive system involved in?
- Ingestion of Food
- Physical and Chemical Digestion
- Absorption of Nutrient Molecules
- Elimination of Undigested Stuff
What are the skin folds in the upper and lower jaw?
Upper and lower LIP FOLDS
A row of small teeth along the upper jaw.
Maxillary Teeth
A set of teeth found on the ROOF of the mouth.
Vomerine Teeth
Anterior Lateral openings that follow from the external nares and trace the canal into the roof of the mouth cavity.
Internal Nares
Bulging regions at the posterior (behind) half of the top roof of the mouth.
Eyeball Prominences
These openings are posterolateral to the eyeballs and medial to the angles of the jaw.
Eustachian Tube
Attached to the floor of the mouth by a short pedicle.
Tongue
It is found directly behind the mouth.
Pharynx
From the pharynx, it is an opening of a short distensible (able to expand) tube.
Esophagus
Ventral to the esophagus.
Laryngeal Prominence (Adam’s Apple)
The Laryngeal Prominence contains a vertical slit-like opening called the
Glottis
This anterior small cavity contains the heart
Pericardial Cavity
This large posterior cavity contains the lungs and other internal organs.
Pleuroperitoneal Cavity
The glistening membrane lining the body wall.
Parietal Peritoneum
The parietal peritoneum can also extend to cover the intestines and other viscera. It then becomes called the?
Visceral Peritoneum / Serosa (same thing)
It is an extension of the parietal peritoneum that suspends the digestive tract.
Mesentery
What are the two (2) types of mesenteries?
Dorsal Mesentery (attaches from digestive tract to median dorsal line)
Ventral Mesentery (visually lost except in the liver and urinary bladder)
Large, trilobed brownish organ occupying the anterior half of the pleuroperitoneal cavity
Liver
The greenish, spherical sac that stores bile secreted by the liver.
Gallbladder
What are the ducts that carry bile to the duodenum?
Hepatic Ducts (from Liver)
Cystic Ducts (from Gallbladder)
Combined are called the
Common Bile Duct
Sac-like organ with three (3) regions. Found dorsal (behind) from the liver.
Stomach
What part of the dorsal mesentery supports the stomach?
Mesogaster
Region of the stomach closest to the esophagus.
Cardiac Region
Region of the stomach that bulges anteriorly.
Fundus
Region of the stomach that leads to the small intestine posteriorly.
Pyloric Region
Longitudinal folds in the inner wall of the stomach.
Rugae
A round, dense body found behind the stomach in the mesogaster that has no digestive function.
Spleen
Abrupt angle to the right that connects the stomach to the small intestines.
Duodenum
Yellowish gland found between the pylorus and duodenum. It provides digestive enzymes and bicarbonates into the small intenstine.
Pancreas
Tightly coiled region of the small intestine going posteriorly to the large intestine.
Ileum
Part of the dorsal mesentery supporting the small intestine.
Mesentery proper
Part of the dorsal mesentery supporting the large intestine.
Mesorectum
The large intestine leads into the rectum, which exits via the?
CLOACAAAAAA
What do you call the exchange of gases?
Respiration
Two (2) stages of respiration.
External Respiration (exchange between environment and organs)
Internal Respiration (exchange within body fluids and tissue cells)
Cavity which the glottis opens downward into.
Larynx (voicebox)
Cartilages that support the larynx.
Arytenoid Cartilages (Anterior)
Cricoid Cartilages (Posterior)
Elastic bands found in the larynx.
Vocal cords
The extremely short tube that connects the larynx to the lungs.
Bronchus
Small air pockets that line the lungs. It is where gas exchange takes place.
Alveoli
