[MOD 4] Animal Histology Flashcards
Four (4) types of animal tissue
- Epithelial
- Connective
- Muscle
- Nervous
What are the types of epithelium?
Simple Squamous
Simple Cuboidal
Simple Columnar
Stratified Squamous
Pseudostratified Columnar
What is simple squamous epithelium?
Thin, rectangular, stacked, and arranged tightly knit. It is found in the mesentery and inner lining of the blood vessels. Thin to allow flexibility and fast diffusion.
What is simple cuboidal epithelium?
They look like cubes with relatively the same height and width. It lines thyroid follicles or kidneys. Used in secretion and absorption.
What is simple columnar epithelium?
Very tall. It can be found in frog intestines. Contains villi (singular: villus).
Goblet cells are a kind of simple columnar epithelium. They secrete mucins.
What is stratified squamous epithelium?
Two or more layers of stacked epithelial cells. It is found in frog skin.
Five (5) types of connective tissue?
Loose/Areolar tissue
Adipose Tissue
Blood
Hyaline Cartilage
Bone
What is Loose connective tissue/areolar tissue?
It is found in areolar tissue beneath the epidermis. The most numerous cells here are the fibroblasts which are responsible for wound healing, making the extracellular matrix, and collagen.
What is adipose tissue?
It stores all the fat in cells called adipocytes. It is surrounded by a thin ring of cytoplasm and has a very large vacuole filled with dissolved lipid droplets. Nuclei are squished and push to the side.
What is Blood?
Found in the human blood smear. You know what blood is wtf
What is Hyaline Cartilage?
It is one of the three types of cartilage. Found in the trachea, nose, larynx, and bronchi. The cells are called chondrocytes which are found in cavities called lacunae. They do not have nerves or blood vessels.
They serve to produce and maintain the extracellular matrix (blueish white) and collagen.
What is Bone?
Bones are hard matrixes filled with calcium and inorganic salts. Bone cells are called osteocytes, they occupy lacunae and many connecting canals called canaliculi.
They can be found in Haversian/osteon canals, characterized by circular collagen bundles.
What is muscle tissue?
Main function is to contract to provide movement.
There are skeletal/striated muscles, smooth muscles, and cardiac muscles.
What is nervous tissue?
Conducts information to cells. Main components are nerve cells called neurons and supporting cells called neuroglia. Found in cow nerve smear.
Dendrite vs Axon
Dendrite receives in the information and sends it to the soma (cell body) who then condenses the info to repackage it again to the axon which sends it to the next neuron.
