Mod 6 Flashcards
Central nervous system
Responsible for processing and interpreting sensory information and issuing commands. Consists of the brain and spinal cord.
Peripheral nervous system
Connects the CNS to the rest of the body. Includes all nerves outside of the CNS
Meninges
3 protective membranes that cover the brain and spinal cord. dura, arachnoid, and pia mater.
Dura Mater
Outermost tough layer.
Flax cerebri, tentorium cerebelli, and falx cerebelli.
Arachnoid mater
The middle web-like layer composed of arachnoid villi.
Pia Mater
Innermost delicate layer adhering to the brain and spinal cord.
Spinal nerves
Transmit signals between the spinal cord and the rest of the body
Grey matter
Consists of neuron cell bodies, dendrites, and unmyelinated axons. Involved in processing and regulating information
Dorsal root
Contains sensory neurons entering the spinal cord.
Spinal nerve
Formed by the merging of the dorsal and ventral roots. Carries both sensory and motor information
Ventral root
Contains motor neurons exiting the spinal cord. “MO.VE.”
White matter
Composed of myelinated axons responsible for transmitting information
Rami
Branches of the spinal nerve that distribute to different body regions.
Posterior Ramus
Targets the back.
Sensory: skin/skeletal muscles
Motor: skeletal muscles, glands, adipose
Anterior Ramus
Targets the front and sides.
Sensory: body wall, thoracic cavity, limbs
Motor: skeletal muscles, smooth muscle, glands of body wall/limbs
Sympathetic nerve
Targets the visceral organs
Somatic nervous system
Controls voluntary actions such as moving skeletal muscles.
Autonomic nervous system
Controls involuntary actions affecting cardiac and smooth muscles and glands. Contains the sympathetic and parasympathetic
Sympathetic nervous system
Fight or flight
Parasympathetic nervous system
Rest and digest
Left hemisphere
Logic, language, and analytical thinking. Controls the right side of the body. “Thinking and language center”
Right hemisphere
Creativity, imagination, and visual-spatial skills. Controls the left side of the body. “Intuitive thinking”
Frontal lobe
Responsible for higher cognitive functions such as reasoning, planning, problem solving, and controlling behavior emotions.
Parietal lobe
Processes sensory information related to touch, temperature, pain, and spatial orientation.
