American Kennel Club (AKC)
An organization that works to advance the study, breeding, exhibiting, running and maintenance of purebred dogs.
American Temperament Test Society (ATTS)
A society that promotes the uniform temperament evaluation of purebred and spayed/neutered mixed-breed dogs.
angulation
In structure, a term used to describe the angles between long bones at joints, for example, at the shoulder.
assistance dog
A dog that’s trained to help its owner in some way. Examples of assistance dogs include guide dogs for blind individuals, hearing dogs, and service dogs.
ATTS Temperament Test
A temperament test developed by the American Temperament Test Society for dogs 18 months or older.
avoidance
An escape mechanism intended to avoid anxiety, conflict danger, fear, or pain.
breed standards
Traits that serve as the models for an ideal member of a particular breed of dog.
Canine Good Citizen Test (CGC Test)
A test administered by the American Kennel Club, which tests some elements of training, socialization, and temperament.
canine hip dysplasia (CHD)
A genetic health problem characterized by lax hip joints, weak rump muscles, and sometimes lameness.
companion dog
A dog kept by someone strictly for company, amusement, or psychological support.
croup
The muscular area around and above the base of the tail.
defense drive
A dog’s instinct to defend itself or its pack.
Delta Society
An organization that tests and certifies dogs for therapy work.
desensitization
A gradual procedure of counter conditioning to change behavior.
dominant dog
A dog with a high rank drive.
drive
An internal mechanism that pushes a dog into taking action; the energy that stimulates a dog to act instinctively.
drive threshold
The level that must be attained for a drive to take effect.
euthanize
To deliberately end the life of an animal suffering from an incurable disease.
flyball
A relay race with four dogs on a team.
friendly stranger
A person unknown to a dog, who approaches the dog in a friendly manner and pets it for a short time.
hackles
The hairs on the neck and back of an animal. Hackles often stand on end when an animal is frightened or angry.
hardness
Resilience; the ability to handle environmental stress well.
Herding Group
A group of dogs that control herds of animals. Herding dogs tend to be quick, agile, alert, and extremely responsive to training.
HGH
A performance test in herding, which was originally designed to test the German Shepherd Dog.
HIC
Herding instinct certified; a title earned when a dog passes a standardized test for herding instinct.
Hound Group
A group of dogs that was originally bred to hunt.
hierarchy
The ranking of members in a group.
imprinting
Learning in young dogs that’s based partly on the acquisition of basic behavior patterns.
innate
Inborn.
neutral stranger
A person not known to a particular dog, who approaches a dog and its owner, talks to the owner, but ignores the dog.
neutral territory
An area that’s not part of the property on which a particular dog lives.
Non-Sporting Group
A group of very diverse dogs, which generally don’t fit into any other category.
Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA)
An organization that addresses the issues of orthopedic and genetic diseases in animals.

A dog’s natural desire to be part of a group.
PAWS
A test designed to identify dogs that could excel in dog jobs, such as police K-9, scent detection, search, protection, agility, and obedience. PAWS stands for possessiveness, attention, willingness, and strength.
Pet Partners Aptitude Test (PPAT)
A test that simulates scenarios likely to be encountered by a therapy dog and handler.
Pet Partners Program
A program for testing dogs for therapy work. It involves a health screening, the PPST, and the PPAT.
Pet Partners Skills Test (PPST)
A measure of how readily a dog can be controlled by a handler.
prey drive
A dog’s natural desire to hunt and capture prey.
drive rank
A dog’s instinct to assume a position of leadership in its pack.
resilience
Hardness; the ability to handle environmental stress well.
Schutzhund
A sport that evaluates a dog’s ability in tracking, obedience, and protection.
Search and Rescue (SAR)
A SAR dog is trained to “search” and “rescue” victims who are lost, trapped, or incapacitated.
temperament
A dog’s innate character, based on genetics and influenced to some degree by environment; personality.
temperament issue
A problem related to a dog’s innate character. Temperament issues are generally not fixable.
temperament test
A test designed to evaluate innate characteristics, such as shyness, rather than training or ability.
Terrier Group
A group of dogs originally bred to hunt and kill vermin.
Volhard Puppy Aptitude Test
A test developed for identifying gifted puppies that are likely to excel in obedience competition.
Volhard Puppy Temperament Test
A test developed for evaluating puppies in terms of dominance or submission.
