backyard breeder
Someone whose pet gets bred by accident or who breeds pets for various reasons. A backyard breeder usually doesn’t understand the importance of breed standards, genetics, behavior, and good health practices.

A condition in which a dog eats its own excrement.
crate training
A housetraining method that uses a crate to help a puppy understand where it should go to eliminate.
dam
A female parent of a four-legged animal.
defecate
To void feces from the bowels.
eliminate
To excrete bodily wastes, either urine or feces.
free feeding
The practice of feeding a dog different meals at different times each day, or randomly feeding a dog throughout the day.
physiological
A term used to describe processes of a living body or its functions.
puppy mill
A breeder who produces large numbers of puppies with little or no attention to placing the puppies.
response perseverance
A condition in which a dog has repeated a behavior so often that breaking the response stimulus takes a very long time.
reverse training
A process that occurs when a dog is trained to urinate in the house and wait to eliminate when taken outside.
sphincter muscles
The ringlike muscles that normally constrict a body passage or orifice so materials can’t pass through the opening.
tether
The attaching of a dog or puppy to its owner or handler by means of a leash. In that way, the owner or handler is aware of the dog’s movements.
urinary incontinence
The lack of normal voluntary control of urinary function.
whelping area
The place where a bitch gives birth to its puppies.
