7
Q

what does o antigen consist of

A

variable sugars (variation BETWEEN bacteria, not within the o-antigen bit)
but they’re repeated units

Q

what are TLRs

A

toll like receptors
part of our immune system that recognise the lipid A part of LPS

Q

are archaea membranes monoderm or diderm and what are they made of (extremeophiles)

A

monoderm
tetra-ether lipids (isoprenyl groups linked through glycerol backbone via an ether bond)

this makes it impermeable to protons hence why its good for rly acidic conditions

Q

what is s layer

A

in all archae
paracrystalline layer composed of only one (or, in a few cases, two) identical proteins or glycoproteins

forms protective structure with narrow pores to limit access to cells

Q

3 differences between peptidoglycan and pseudomurein

A
  • instead of NAM, it has N-acetyltalosaminuronic acid (stupid ass name, jus remember NAT)
  • B 1-3 glycosidic bonds instead of 1-4
  • the peptide bridge only has L amino acids, no D AAs
