MOD 11B Flashcards
present at birth
CONGENITAL ANOMALIES
grace has a condition that is severe but it resolved. what kind is it?
acute
Amelia has a condition that is ongoing with no foreseeable cure, but it is managed
chronic
Lilian has a a condition that flares up every few months, what kind is it?
episodic
Olivia is getting sicker and sicker. what condition does she have?
progressive
Reasons for the increase in prevalence in physical disabilities and health issues
improved ID, medical advances - survival
caused by injury to the brain or spinal cord
(neurological damage) that also affects the ability to move parts of one’s
body (motor impairment).
* Result of injury which occurs before, during, or after birth that also
affects the ability to move parts of one’s body
* When a child’s nervous system is damaged, no matter what the cause,
muscular weakness or paralysis is often one of the symptoms.
* Non-traumatic causes of brain damage (e.g., hypoxia, tumour, stroke)
Exam Focus: Cerebral palsy, Seizure disorder (epilepsy), and Spina bifida
neuromotor impairment
a permanent but not unchanging
disorder of movement and/or posture and of motor function attributed to a
non-progressive interference, lesion, or abnormality of the developing
immature brain
* Not a disease, not contagious, not progressive; minimal to severe impact
* Medical and rehabilitation advances offer hope for overcoming resultant disabilities
motor + psych dysfunction, seizures, cog disorders, communication disorders, emo/behav disorders
cerebral palsy
t/f - people with cerebral palsy have a full range of intel capacity but do lower on avg
t
Classification based on y extremities (limbs) involved (3)
QUADRIPALEGIA, PARAPLEGIA AND HEMIPLEGIA
Classification based on type of movement in neuromotor impairments (3)
Spasticity, choreoathetoid, atonic
the term applied to abrupt, involuntary movements
and difficulty maintaining balance.
Choreoathetoid
a sudden alteration of consciousness, usually accompanied by
motor activity and/or sensory phenomena; caused by an abnormal
discharge of electrical energy in the brain.
Individuals with have recurrent seizures
Primarily a medical problem, but educators may be expected to manage the
seizures and to dispel myths and prejudice toward people who have
seizures
seizure disorder (epilepsy)
is a congenital midline defect due to incomplete closure of
bony spinal column during fetal development
* Extent of paralysis is based on location of defect along the spinal cord
* Importance of folic acid and vitamin B12
often have intelligence in the average range;
* have increased risk of learning disabilities in mathematics abilities,
reading comprehension, using text, inferential thinking, and executive
function
spina bifida
Hereditary disease characterized by progressive
weakness caused by degeneration of muscle fibres
* Individual’s intelligence is unaffected unless there are additional
associated disabilities
* Educational considerations include mobility issues and the provision of
education during periods of confinement
muscular dystrophy
