Critical Thinking
Thinking that does not blindly accept arguments and conclusions
Empiricism
The idea that knowledge comes from experience and that observation and experimentation enable scientific knowledge
Wilhelm Wundt
Established the first psychology laboratory at the university of leipzing, germany
Edward Titchener
Student of Wundt. He engaged people in self- reflective introspection
Structuralism
An early school of thought promoted by Wundt and Titchener used introspection to reveal the structure of the human mind.
Introspection
The process of looking inward in an attempt to directly observe one’s own psychological processes
William James
Considered the evolved functions of our thoughts and feelings. Functionalist, he studied down-to-earth emotions, memories, willpower, habits and moment -to - moment
Functionalism
An early school of thought promoted by James and influenced by Darwin; explored how mental and behavioral process function.
Mary Calkins
James mentored Calkins to finish all PH D requirements and she later on became the first female president of the APA
Margaret Floy Washburn
The first official female to get a psychology PH D. Later became the second female president of APA.
Behaviorism
The view that psychology should be an objective science that stub behavior without reference to mental processes.
Humanistic Psychology
A historically significant perspective that emphasizes human growth potential.
