Mobilization Flashcards
Joint motion is ranked on a scale from _ - _ with _ being no movement and _ being complete instability.
0 - 6
What does an empty end feel signify?
The “true” end feel is not met becasue the patient resists testing or ask that the movement be stopped
What is a capsular pattern of movement?
A series of limitations of joint movement when the joint capsule is a limiting structure.
The shoulder capsular pattern is external rotation > abduction > internal rotation. What does this mean?
external rotation is proportionally the most decreased movement, abduction the next decreased, and internal rotation the least decreased movement
Describe a Grade I mobilization
small amplitude rhythmic oscillations are performed at the beginning of the range
Describe a Grade II mobilization
large amplitude rhythmic oscillations are performed within the range of free movement, not reaching the limit
Describe a Grade III mobilization
large amplitude rhythmic oscillations are performed up to the limit of the available motion and are stressed into the tissue resistance
Describe a Grade IV mobilization
small amplitude rhythmic oscillations are performed at the limit of the available motion and stressed into the tissue resistance
Describe a Grade V mobilization
Manipulation
small amplitude, high velocity thrust techniques are performed to “snap and tear” adhesions at the limit of the available motion
What grade mobilization would you use to relieve pain and relax muscles?
Grade I or II
What grade mobilization would you use to stretch shortened joint tissues?
Grade III or IV
How can you tell the difference between muscle (contractile tissue) and joint/ligamentous (non-contractile) tissue dysfunction?
If resisted movements produce or increase symptoms you know it is muscle dysfunction.
If passive joint play movements produce or increase symptoms and are restricted you know it is joint/ligamentous tissue dysfunction
If a resisted movement test results are painful and strong what can you conclude?
Minor lesion of a muscle or tendon
If a resisted movement test results are painful and weak what can you conclude?
Major lesion of a muscle of tendon
If a resisted movement test results are painless and weak what can you conclude?
Neurological lesion or complete rupture of a muscle or tendon
