Define Kyphosis.
Increased curve of thoracic spine
Define Lordosis.
Increased curve of lumbar spine
Define Scoliosis.
Lateral “S” or “C” shaped spinal column
Define footdrop.
Inability to dorsiflex and invert foot due to peroneal nerve damage
What are the main respiratory concerns due to immobility?
Atelectasis (collapse of alveoli) and hypostatic pneumonia (inflammation of the lung from stasis or pooling of secretions)
What is the purpose of ROM exercises & how often should they be done?
To reduce the risk of contractures and aid in preventing thrombi; should be done hourly while awake
Define CPM.
Continuous passive ROM machine; moves an extremity to a prescribed angle for a prescribed period of time
How often should you perform a respiratory assessment for patients with restricted activity?
Every 2 hours
Define isotonic contraction.
Active movement
Define isometric contraction.
Increase in muscle tension or muscle work but no shortening or active movement of muscle
How long does it take for pressure ulcers to develop?
3 hours
