Mobile Devices Flashcards
Authentication Devices (There are 5)
Something you know: username, password
Something you have: physical token, key fob, etc
**Something you are: **fingerprint, face scan
Something you do: how you sign your name, the way you speak
somewhere you are: location factor
Examples of Wearable Technologies
Smart watches, Fitness monitors, VR Headsets, etc.
What is Tethering and what methods allow you to do this?
1
Using mobile device’s cellular data to provide internet access to another device can be achieved using USB, Bluetooth, or Wi-Fi.
What causes a mobile device’s cellular network to slow down?
3
- Mobile device reaches its data cap for a month. Service provider limits the amount of data transferred by users account over the cellular network.
Once data limit is reached…(either)
- Cellular data is slowed down
- Data stops completely
OLED
10
Organic Light Emitting Diode.
What to look out for?
- Each pixel has it’s own separate LED light
- Can be made of plastic
- Can be folded, rolled up, or manipulated
Benefits
- Doesnt require separate backlight (No CCFL or LED)
- Better contrast ratios
- Can be thinner
- Less power intensive leads to longer battery life
Cons
- Maximum brightness not as bright as LCD (If in bright sun hard to see).
- Susceptible to burn in (Same static image being displayed)
- Turn off display or change display.
Location Services
7
What to look out for?
3 Types
1. Course Positioning (Oldest): Rough guess, uses 3 towers.
2. Global Positioning: Consists of satellites and networks of ground stations.
- Most smart phones have
- Needs GPS receiver
-Enabled in settings
3. Indoor Positioning System (IPS): Allows a device to figure out location indoors.
- Bluetooth, RFID, Wireless networks, and cellular towers
IPS
5
In-Plane Switching
What to look out for?
-Rotate
Benefits
- Great color accuracy and reproduction at a wider range of viewing angles
- Can be on almost on the side and still see (40 or 60 degrees)
- Response times close to TN displays
Cons
- Doesn’t support high refresh rates
TN
Twisted Nematic (TN)
What to look out for?
- Cells aligned in twisted state
- High refresh rate 120 or 144 Hz (Popular with gamers)
-Earliest Type
- Found in budget laptops, smart phones, & Tablets
Benefits
-Faster response times
- Less motion blur or ghosting when using it for something with high frame rate
Cons
VA
Vertical Alignment
What to look out for?
- Tilt
- Good middle ground between TN and IPS
Benefits
- Wide color palette
Really good contrast ratio (Dark darks and light lites)
Cons
- Viewing angle not as good as IPS display
-Response times are slower than IPS and TN (will get Motion blur/ ghosting)
LED
Light-Emitting Diode
What to look out for?
- Newer form of light that uses Direct Current (DC)
- When using LED you’re still going to use TN, IPS, or VA
Benefits
- Uses less power leading to longer battery life
Cons
CCFL
3
Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lighting
What to look out for?
- Lamp behind display
- AC voltage (uses inverter to convert DC to AC)
- If burns out/stops you cant see things on the display
Inverter
4
Also known as Inverter board, Screen Inverter, and LCD Inverter
What to look out for?
- Small green board attached to LCD panel
- In mobile devices, it is the power supply for the backlight of LCDs (LCDs rely on backlight)
- IF broken/ bad the display will be dim and hard to see without external light.
Benefits
- Uses less power leading to longer battery life
Cons
Digitizer
3
What to look out for?
- Converts touch into digital signals interpreted as input
- layer sandwiched between protective glass and the display panel inside of a touchscreen display
- Haptic feedback (Touch responsiveness(feeling of typing on keyboard)
Accelerometer
5
What you look out for
- focuses on gravity, vibration, quick acceleration.
- System and signal to stop operation when it senses droping or sudden force to prevent data loss
- Driving games
- Does good with X (Roll) and Y axis (pitch)
Cons
- doesn’t do well with Z axis (depth - forward and backward)
Gyroscope
5
Would you look out for?
- Gestures (ex: shake to undo)
- Image stabilization
- Can move in three dimensions. Detects pitch (y), roll (X), and yaw (z)
- Flight simulator simulator
- Live photos
IMAP
5
Internet, message, access, protocol
What to look out for
- TCP/IP application
- uses TCP port 143
- Encrypted port: 993
- leaves email on the server and allow for synchronization to all devices
- includes read status
POP3
5
Post office protocol
What to look out for
- ports 110
- Encrypted port 995
- Mail is downloaded to device and removed from mail servers mailbox
- server deletes messages once downloaded
- TCP/IP application protocol provides access to mail stored in remote mailbox server
SMTP
3
Simple, mail, transfer, protocol
What to look out for
- used to send email not receive
- port 25
- Encrypted port 465
HTTPS
2
Hyper, text, transfer, protocol, secured
What to look out for
- Used for secure, web browsing
- port 443
LCD
Liquid crystal display
What to look out for
- controlled by electrical current to crystals inside display
Signature pad
2
What do you look out for?
- electronically captures handwritten signature, using pen or stylus
- Once captured digital signatures can be digital stored for future use
NFC
Near, field, communication
What to look out for
- Set of protocols that enable two electronic devices
- contactless payment
- transfer contact or information
Bluetooth
3
What to look out for
- Wireless technology standard used for transferring data between devices over short distances
- essentially a personal area network
- commonly used with a mouse, trackpad, keyboard, headphones, etc
Touchpad
1
What to look out for
- output device designed to control cursor instead of the mouse
iCloud
1
What to look out for
- Apple cloud file synchronization
M.2
6
“M dot 2”
What’s the lookout for?
- New set of form factors for mini card interfaces
- provides direct interface with PCIe bus to provide higher bus speeds then SATA connection
- comes in four different sizes based on length (depends on the model and space available)
- 80 mm: most common used in modern laptops
- 1.8 inch or 2.5 inch: modern laptops
- 3.5 inch: only used in desktops
UDP
Netflix
8
User datagram protocol
what to look out for
- connectionless
- No acknowledgement
- Sequecing
- Not reliable
- Data sent over UDP can be lost/never sent
- not used for general web browsing over HTTP/ HTTPS
- UDP is very good at streaming media like videos (faster than TCP)
- Streaming videos or making Voice over IP (VoIP) calls are examples of use cases that rely upon UDP for their transmission.
