Steps to maximise someone’s understanding of why they’re being searched

A

Grounds for a search
Object of a search

Warrant card - show if not in uniform
Identify yourself (name and rank)
Station - say which police station you are attached to
Entitled- say that they are entitled to a copy of the search record (within 3 months)
Legal power - say under what legal power you are detaining them
“You are detained for the purposes of a search”
