MN CDL Section 10_ 2.1 Flashcards
Engine status when examining Engine compartment (Step #2)
Must be off
Engine compartment: Leaks & Hoses (Step #2)
- Look for puddles on the ground
- Look for dripping fluids on underside of engine and transmission
- Inspect hoses for condition and leaks
Engine compartment: Oil Level (Step #2)
- Check oil level when engine is off
- Indicate where dipstick is located
- Check that the oil level is within safe operating range. Level must be above refill mark
Engine compartment: Coolant Level (Step #2)
- Looks at sight glass on radiator or coolant reservoir; adequate level will show in sight glass
- If not sight glass is available, you must describe what you would look for after removing radiator cap
- Let engine cool, cover the cap with towel to prevent spray, let pressure decrease, fill to marks or to cap
Engine compartment: Power Steering Fluid (Step #2)
- Check the dipstick and sees where the fluid level is relative to the refill mark or checks sight glass
Engine compartment: Belts (Step #2)
- Check the following belts for snugness (1/2” to 3/4” of play at center of belt)
- Look for cracks, frays, loose fibers or signs of wear
- Belts include: Power steering belt, water pump belt, alternator belt, air compressor belt
- If any of the above components are not belt driven, student must tell examiner which components are not belt driven
Engine compartment: Water Pump (Step #2)
- Indicate where the water pump is located
2. Check that it is securely mounted and not leaking
Engine compartment: Alternator (Step #2)
- Indicate where the alternator is located
2. Check to verify that it is securely mounted and all wires securely fastened
Engine compartment: Battery (Step #2)
- Battery fluid level, connections, tie downs
2. Cracked or worn electrical insulation, all wires
Engine compartment: Master Cylinder (Step #2)
- Indicate where master cylinder is located
- Check that it is securely mounted and not leaking
- Check fluid levels (if visible)
Engine compartment: Windshield washer fluid (Step #2)
- Check fluid level
Engine compartment: Automatic Transmission Fluid (Step #2)
- Indicate where the dipstick is located
- See that transmission fluid level is within safe operating range
- State that engine needs to be running to properly check fluid level
Inside Cab & Engine Start: Safe Start (Step #3)
- “Parking brake” must be on
- “Park” - Transmission is in park
- Start engine
- Listen for unusual noises
- ABS lights should turn on then off
- Note this is an automatic transmission
Inside Cab & Engine Start: Safety Belt (Step #3)
- Check that the safety belt is securelymounted, adjusts, latches properly, and is not ripped or frayed
Inside Cab & Engine Start: Warning lights and buzzers (Step #3)
- Should all go away after starting engine
Inside Cab & Engine Start: Oil Temperature (Step #3)
- Should begin gradual rise to engine oil temperature
Inside Cab & Engine Start: Oil Pressure Guage (Step #3)
- Make sure oil pressure guage is working
- Check that pressure gauge shows increasing or normal oil pressure or that the warning light goes off
- If equiped, oil temperature gauge should begin a gradual rise to the normal operating range
Inside Cab & Engine Start: Coolant Temperature (Step #3)
- Make sure the temperature gauge is working
2. Temperature should begin to climb to the normal operating range or temperature light should be off
Inside Cab & Engine Start: Ammeter/Voltmeter (Step #3)
- Check that gauges show alternator and/or generator is charging or that warning light is off
Inside Cab & Engine Start: Mirrors and Windshield (Step #3)
- Mirrors should be clean and adjusted properly from the inside
- Windshield should be clean with no illegal stickers, no obstructions, or damage to the glass
Inside Cab & Engine Start: Emergency Equipment (Step #3)
- Check for spare electrical fuses
- Check for three red reflective triangles, 6 fuses, or 3 liquid burning flares
- Check for properly mounted, charged and rated fire extinguisher
- If vehicle is not equipped with electrical fuses student must mention this to the examiner
Inside Cab & Engine Start: Optional Emergency Equipment (Step #3)
- Chains, tire changing equipment, list of emergency numbers, accident reporting kit
Inside Cab & Engine Start: Wipers/Washers (Step #3)
- Check that wiper arms and blades are secure, not damaged, and operate smoothly
- If equipped, windshield washers must operate correctly
Inside Cab & Engine Start: Lighting Indicators On the Dash. All exterior lights have an indicator on the dash that needs to be tested at this step. There is also a key brake system indicator that should be identified (Step #3)
- Test that dash indicators work when corresponding lights are turned on:
- LT Signal, RT Signal
- Four way emergency flashers
- Headlights / High beam headlight
- Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) indicator
- Dimmer switch
- Parking, clearance, identification marker switches
Inside Cab & Engine Start: External lights(Step #3)
- Headlights
- Dimmer switch
- Turn signal
- Four-way flashers
- Parking, clearance, identification marker switches
Inside Cab & Engine Start: Horn (Step #3)
- Check that electric horn works
Inside Cab & Engine Start: Heater / Defroster (Step #3)
- Test that the heater and defroster works
Ignore
Ignore
Start engine and check: Hydraulic Brake Check (Step #7)
- Pump brake 3 times, then hold brake down for 5 seconds, brake pedal should not move during the five seconds
- Check that warning buzzer or light is off
- If equiped with hydraulic brake reserve (back-up) system, with key off, depress the brake pedal and listen for sound of the reserve system electric motor
Inside Cab & Engine Start: Check condition of controls (Step #3)
- Check the following for looseness, sticking, damage, or improper setting:
- Steering wheel
- Pedals: Clutch, Accelerator, Brake controls (Foot, Trailer, Parking)
- Transmission controls
Start Engine and check: Service Brake Check (Step #7)
- Design to determine if the brakes are working properly
- Pull forward at 5 mph, and apply service brake and stop
- Check to see if the vehicle does not pull to one side and that it stops when brakes are applied
Turn Off Engine and Check Lights (Step #4)
- Make sure parking brake is set
- TURN OFF THE ENGINE AND TAKE KEY WITH YOU
- Turn on headlights (low beams) and four-way emergency flashers
- Get out of vehicle
External Inspection: Begin walk around inspection at front of vehicle (Step #5)
- First step of walk around is to check lights
- Check that low beams are on and the 4-way flashers are working
- Push dimmer switch and check that high beams work
- Turn off headlights and four way emergency flashers
- Turn on parking, clearance, side-marker and identification lights
